| Thermal Power Engineering or simply Thermal Engineering has gained utmost importance in the engineering design field because of its wide spectrum of applications in real life situations. Applications range from daily coffee/tea sipping, cooking to power plant applications like thermal/hydro/nuclear power plants, Electronics cooling, Biofluidics, renewable energy like solar energy, Wind Energy, Wave Energy & Ocean Energy; IC engines for automobiles, aeronautical & space applications like aircraft, Helicopter and space shuttles; Electrical Appliances; Air Conditioning systems used in households, offices, hotels, airports, clean rooms, tool rooms etc. |

| Thermal design is as important as component or machine design itself though a little attention has been given to it. The very good example of this is the failure of USA space shuttle carrying astronaut Kalpan Chawla of Indian origin was due to improper thermal design of space shuttle. In fact, we all human beings and all animals are healthy today due to proper thermal balance of body temperature and imbalance leads to the symptoms of diseases. The common phenomenon of ‘computer hanging’ while working with computers for long hours is due to the excessive heat generation in computer components/ active devices. |

| The study of combustion process required for any vehicle to propel is again dependent on thermal analysis and turbulent flow simulations especially for hypersonic, supersonic vehicles involving compressible flow flows and also in internal combustion engines. The process industry and power plants also requires steam & gas as a working fluid and hence knowledge of Steam Power Cycles and Gas Power Cycles and associated thermodynamics is necessary to analyze the process industry power requirements. This in turn involves the study of heat exchangers used in process industries. The thermal design of devices and also energy management including energy audit are important areas during the study of thermal power engineering. Since many thermal problems are being solved and simulated using numerical techniques, courses like Advanced Mathematics and Finite Element Method are studied as integral part of the program. |
